Mazda Ibuki Concept

Remember the funky-looking Ibuki concept car that broke cover at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show? At the time, it was touted by the Mazda suits as the concept car for the MX-5 that's in showrooms now. But, as one insider revealed to us, the truth is more complex. This topless coupe turns out to be the base for the next-generation MX-5, reportedly slated to make an appearance in concept form at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. Depicted in these illustrations is one artist's impression of what the new roadster is expected to look like.

Our insider says the new roadster will employ the RX-8 philosophy Mazda bills as a "super front midship four-cylinder layout." In Japan-speak, that refers to a four-cylinder engine mounted aft of the front axle for optimum front/rear weight balance. The fuel tank and main exhaust are located forward of the rear axle, meaning that all critical components are situated inside the wheelbase.

By employing a revised version of the RX-8's twin-backbone frame, Mazda is aiming to create a coupe with the chassis rigidity of a closed-top car. Our insider says much of the new car was already featured on the Ibuki, whose specifications and body structure are increasingly appearing in patents in the U.S. and Japan. And we have also seen what Mazda is planning for its next design theme, as witnessed in the Shinari concept car that debuted in August at a Milan workshop. News coming out of Hiroshima suggests that the Shinari contains strategic design elements of future Mazdas, especially the new MX-5. We'll see the Shinari concept at next month's L.A. auto show.

When asked about the relevance of the Ibuki, one Mazda engineer went so far as to say, "The Ibuki is not a one-off future concept car. It contains crucial aspects of the next-generation roadster." He said the R&D team is aiming for a sub-2200-pound curb weight, making it far lighter than the current car. We can also expect to see shorter overhangs and a smaller capacity engine from the all-new SKY engine series, with the 1.5-liter variant mentioned as the car's engine of choice.

Mazda is developing the next car with a combination of weight and power that will take the MX-5 back to its 1989 origins, roots that second- and third-generation MX-5 chief engineer Takao Kijima says "must always be lightweight sports. The car got bigger and heavier over the last decade, but it's now time to reverse the process and get back to basics, and build a coupe that handles like no other."

Subaru Upcoming Models

The latest incarnation of the Subaru WRX STI isn't the only vehicle Subaru is showcasing at Tokyo this year. Alongside the Japanese automaker's rally-racer will be two new concepts and Japanese-market limited-edition models of the Impreza hatchback and the Legacy Outback wagon.

The first vehicle is the EXIGA Concept, a seven-passenger wagon said to combine utility with a sporting driving experience. Power comes from what's likely the same turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer four that motivates the Impreza WRX models and is sent to all four wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. A large glass roof no doubt lends the EXIGA Concept an airy atmosphere, while theater-style seating affords every passenger an unobstructed view.

Subaru's second concept is the G4e. An electric vehicle, the G4e Concept offers seating for five and optimizes interior space by storing the batteries in the floor. We'd guess that will also do wonders for the concept's handling, as batteries tend to be rather heavy, and this layout should provide for a low center of gravity. The G4e Concept somewhat mimics the styling of many of today's "tall" cars such as the Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe, though it's slightly edgier. Subaru claims a 200 km (124 mile) range from the G4e, thanks to lithium-ion batteries and a lightweight body.

ile Subaru doesn't seem to have much to say about them, we've included images of the Impreza BEAMS Edition and Legacy Outback Urban selection as well. Both appear to be limited-edition models for Japanese consumers only, with the only cosmetic modifications. The BEAMS Impreza supposedly gets special colors and equipment selection (BEAMS is a popular Japanese boutique), while the Legacy Outback Urban selection comes in a unique "lightening red" color with silver side mirrors and roof rails, along with leather and Alcantara seating. Both cars will likely hit Japanese showrooms in early 2008.

The Toyota Yaris is well-known as a value-driven sub-compact car with proven reliability and excellent fuel efficiency. It has also proven in past SEMA shows to be very versatile when it comes to customization. The little sub-compact returns to the 2010 SEMA Show, this time proving it can also be converted into a very capable race car.

To make the Yaris racecar a reality Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. asked SportsCar magazine to convert a 2006 Yaris five-door liftback. The Yaris selected for the project was a veteran of the 2007 SEMA Show, formerly known as the Yaris Club project. Toyota renamed the car the GT-S Club Racer as an homage to the popular GT-S grade Celica’s of the 1980’s and 90’s. SportsCar magazine accepted the challenge and began remaking the Yaris into a Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) sanctioned racecar.

SportsCar magazine began the project by shedding nearly 400 pounds off the vehicle’s curb weight by removing several creature comforts like the air conditioning and audio system to tip the scale at less than the 1,900 pound class minimum.

The exterior of the Yaris GT-S Club Racer features a Molly Designs inspired graphics that pays homage to Dan Gurney’s All American Racers-built IMSA GTP Toyota Eagle Racers of the 1990’s. Additional exterior features include a Seibon carbon fiber hood and hatchback, AeroCatch hood pins, Racing Lifestyle fender flares, I/O Port Racing Supplies tow hooks, and Lexan side and rear windows. The Yaris rides on three-piece JRW330 13 x 7 Jongbloed Racing wheels wrapped with Goodyear Eagle Sports Car Special 20.0 x 9.5-13 racing slicks.

Underneath the hood is a Toyota 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with VVT-i. SportsCar magazine made several modifications to increase the horsepower from the stock 106 to 145 @ 7252 RPM. Modifications included several bolt-on performance parts including a K&N air intake, a DC Sports header, and Rebello Racing Engines camshafts and cylinder head work to name a few. A Mishimoto radiator and Coast Fabrication Ultra Lightweight racing muffler were also added. The engine is mated to a SPEC aluminum flywheel and three-puck clutch, a Kaaz limited slip differential and a 4.312 final drive gear set swapped in from a Scion xB.

To help slow the car Carbotech XP-8 brake pads and Goodridge stainless steel brake lines were added.

Modifications on the inside included an AiM Sports MXL race data acquisition dash system paired with an AEM Performance Electronics EMS Series 2 ECU, for complete control of the engine and data accumulation. Safety was addressed with a Sparco Evo 2 FIA race seat and race pedals while Autopower supplied a Pro-Cam six-point harness and window net. Additional safety features include an NRG Innovations steering wheel with a quick release hub, a Braille No-Weight battery, Longacre kill switch and mirrors, and an Emergency Suppressions Systems fire system.

Once completed, it was time to race. The Yaris GT-S Club Racer won its very first race, topping the competition at Willow Springs Raceway in Southern California. Driven by SportsCar magazine associate editor Jason Isley, the little racecar went on to win the Southern Pacific H Production Division Championship. Capturing its division qualified the Yaris for the 47th SCCA National Championship Runoffs at the historic Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin where it competed in late September. At the championships, it qualified 13th and finished a very respectable 8th out of a field of 26. Competing against older classics, it was the newest car in the field by 19 years!

After the SEMA Show, Toyota and Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC, will host the producers of Gran Turismo® 5 at a race track where they will compare their "virtual” racing skills versus their "actual” racing skills by driving the GT-S Club Racer in a time trial format.

Peugeot EX1 Concept

200 years of existence and that too continuous, this is what Peugeot can boast off and they are doing so with style, by including their concept car at the Paris Motor Show. Their 100 percent electric car of the sports genre named EX1 has already been known for its record holding place of accelerating from a standing start. The car is a two-seater roadster and has a style that is very much futuristic. The body is also very well streamlined with aerodynamic features. The car has two electric motors and one ultra-light structure. It is a four wheel drive and develops 250 KW or 340 bhp in the cumulative mode. Asphalt and the 20Cup are the two concept cars that seem to have inspired this Peugeot EX1.

The body styling seems to be taken from the SR1 concept which had been shown earlier this year, while the door which has polished aluminum components reminds one of the RCZ and BB1. As per Peugeot the architecture of the concept car has been based on giving it the shape of a water droplet. They have also mentioned that the rear section has been built around two closely set rear wheels. The front suspension has been given a drop link double wishbone arrangement.

The rear suspension of the EX1 Concept consists of one "swinging arm” which is linked to a shock absorber that is mounted centrally. This is in turn connected via a rocker arm which provides for a variable damping rate. Carbon / honeycomb composite has been used for the monocoque body structure and this provides for optimized weight and rigidity. Two electric motors mounted one each on the axle is what powers the EX1. Each electric motor gives a peak output of 125 KW with the total power of 250 KW or 340 bhp. The total torque generated is 240 Nm. The driving seat is at floor level and for control, two control handles are provided. The wind deflectors that are integrated on the car allow for driving without the need for helmet.

The member of the forum by id bodycustom1 had initially just decided to repair the E46 330i while using a ZHP Performance package. His father it appears came into the scene and gave him an idea which formulated into what we see and hold in awe as of now.

The bed was not retained from the old car and therefore the project now has a more fabricated and streamlined body with a custom rear window, shortened sunroof track, and BMW gas cap integrated into the shortened bed.

Hamann Porsche Cayenne 2011

German tuning company Hamann has announced the launch of a tuning package for the Porsche Cayenne which would alter the aerodynamic aspect of the car. They have also mentioned that there would be a future package for the same car which would look into the engine performance aspects of the car.

The first package that addresses the aerodynamic aspects includes a new front apron with integrated 2 LED daytime running lights, new side sills, and a new rear apron with a new Hamann sport rear muffler 4 tailpipes. There is also the hood made up of carbon fiber as well as additional air intake. The tuner has also given a new set of ultra-light forged 22 inch 3-pieced light-alloy wheel. The exhaust system consists of pre-catalyst convertor.

The car suspension system have also been attended to by the tuning company in which they have lowered the height of the Cayenne by 35 mm. For engine power there is the Electronic power advancement system through a reprogramming of the ECU. The diesel version engine is expected to go up to 275 hp due to this modification where the existing power output was 240 hp.

FORD MUSTANG BOSS 2011

Ford has released details of a new, race-inspired version of the Mustang called the Boss 302 - and it's set to be the 'quickest, best-handling straight-production Mustang' ever sold by the company.

Boss 302? That sounds familiar...

Indeed. The original Boss was created back in 1969 and Ford's reviving the stripped-out, lightweight philosophy for 2011.

What's new?

The Boss is based around the recently-launched Mustang GT, and subscribes to the 'less is more' school of thinking. Ford has given each and every working part a good going over to make sure it performs to its maximum potential while being as light as possible. Think of it, if you will, as America's answer to the 911 GT3.

Power comes from the existing 5.0-litre V8 found in the Mustang GT, although it has been retuned to produce a not-insignificant 440bhp compared with the standard car's 412bhp. The suspension has also been lowered, and this, allied to new adjustable dampers, should help make the Mustang a slightly less disappointing drive than regular cars, whose style easily outweighs the dynamic prowess.

It certainly looks like it means business

You're not wrong there. The stock Mustang isn't exactly shy and retiring, but the Boss takes visual aggression to a whole new level. Details such as the jutting front splitter and a range of eye-catching colour schemes - not to mention those brash alloys - will ensure Boss drivers stand out from the crowd.

The interior is pretty similar to that of the GT, save for a couple of trim differences and that instrument pod perched on top of the centre console.

When can I buy one?

This is a Mustang, which of course means that UK buyers can forget about picking up a Boss 302 from their local Ford dealership. If you're really keen, though, you can always have one imported from next year.
